Tanzanite: The World's Rarest Gem and Tanzania's $600 Million Market
Found only in a 14-square-kilometre zone near Mount Kilimanjaro, tanzanite's exclusivity commands premium global prices. Tanzania is pushing domestic cutting and polishing to capture more value chain margin.
Tanzanite is found only in the Merelani Hills near Arusha, making it geographically the rarest commercially traded gemstone. The global tanzanite retail market is estimated at $600 million annually, yet Tanzania earns only $30 to $50 million, almost entirely in rough or semi-processed form. Cutting, polishing, and retail margin are captured predominantly in India, Thailand, and the United States. Tanzania enacted a 2019 trading policy requiring rough tanzanite above a specified weight to pass through the Tanzanite One Trading Company before export, aiming to reduce underdeclaration and encourage domestic processing.
Beneficiation Investment
The government's Tanzania Gemstone Cutting and Polishing Centre in Arusha has begun building local processing capacity with training partnerships from Indian and Thai cutters. Exporting cut and polished stones rather than rough could retain $50 to $80 million in additional value annually. Tanzania is also targeting Chinese and Middle Eastern consumers, where coloured gemstone demand is growing rapidly.
