The Vaccine Manufacturing Push
The African Union set a target of producing 60% of Africa's vaccine needs on the continent by 2040. Starting from less than 1%, this is an enormous ambition. Progress is real: Aspen Pharmacare in South Africa has produced Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccines under a technology transfer arrangement, the first COVID vaccine manufactured in Africa. BioNTech's mRNA vaccine manufacturing hubs in Rwanda, Senegal, and South Africa broke ground in 2022-23.
